Sam is a PhD student studying positive organizational psychology and an organizational design consultant working at a company called The Ready. He helps people and organizations think about work in new and better ways.

What is your evening routine?

When I'm on top of my game I will get a notification on my phone at 9:00 PM telling me to start my evening routine. That consists of changing for bed, putting on some blue light blocking glasses (because I'm a mega-nerd), making some Sleepytime tea, and kicking back to either read or watch something deliberately (no randomly surfing the Internet or television/Netflix). At 10:00 I get into bed and aim to be sleep by 10:30.

Have you changed it recently? If so, how?

The blue light blocking glasses are a new addition. I'm not sure if they are going to stick around, especially since iOS has Night Shift now.

How long have you kept it for?

This specific routine has been in action for 4 or 5 months. Aspects of it have been around in bits and pieces for years. It's only recently I've been able to pull it all together into a coherent routine.

What does your last meal of the day look like?

There's not much consistency here. Sometimes I cook, sometimes I eat out, it happens between 6 and 8 PM. I try not to eat any kind of snack after dinner/right before bed.

What time do you usually go to sleep?

10:30 p.m.

What temperature do you usually sleep in?

The colder the better. I live in a very old apartment with pretty terrible temperature control so I'm not sure what temperature it usually is. I think I like mid to high 60s when I sleep.

What time do you usually wake up?

5:30 AM

Do you do something to make your morning easier? If so, what?

I have no expectations about being productive first thing in the morning. I let myself do whatever the hell I want (usually reading) for the first hour or so.
